| Why do you need a web site? by Cheri Bradbury, WebIncome.com |
|
cherib writes, "Seems everyone has a web site now. Your church probably has one. The grocery store has one. Hey, even your neighbor's 9 year old probably has one. Now you're thinking, I better get one too - I don't want to be left behind, right? "
|
It ain't necessarily so. There are lots of great reasons to have a web site - promote your business; get more customers for your service; make it easy for visitors to find the church, meeting hall, town board meeting or 4-H meetings. Keep relatives informed of a family reunion. But there are also lots of web sites that got started in a fit of enthusiasm that either dropped off the map in a hurry, or were abandoned in cyber-space.
How do you decide if you need a web site?
Think.
1) Do you have anything to say? Lots of people start "blogs" (aka web logs, sort of an internet version of a diary) or forums then find out they get writer's block and can't think of anything to say (visit my own blog at www.skaffe.com/writergrrrl for a great example of THAT!) If you don't have the time or the imagination to keep your information current, you may not need a web site.
2) Would people benefit from information about your business or services? Maybe you have a lot of information that would help people decide if they need your services. If they could find it on the Internet before they come to your shop, would it help them? Then this may be a good reason to have a web site.
3) Does your school team or your hobby group have a regular schedule or programs? Posting the football team schedules may help more people show up for games. Perhaps posting the meeting programs for your writers group will encourage newcomers to show up. Keep potential visitors informed.
There are many good reasons to make the effort to build a good web site for your business, your hobby or your family. But don't jump in and build one "just because" - maintaining a good web site takes time and effort.
